CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Charlotte “Charlie” Vergier
CANON: Rhythm Thief and the Emperor’s Treasure
CANON REFERENCE: Here’s the Wikipedia article.
AGE: 17
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS-4 (prone to taking advanced classes- Charlie is a prodigy, after all.)
APPEARANCE: have a purdy picture. Charlie is easily mistaken for a boy when wearing investigateur gear, but isn’t opposed to dressing more feminine when out and about in civilian clothes. Yes, she does smile. Sometimes.
PERSONALITY:
Charlie’s most obvious trait would probably be the stubbornness that seems to run rampant in the Vergier family line, and she’s known to often butt heads with the father she so clearly takes after. In an effort to prove her worth to the Paris Constabulary and her father, Inspector Paul Vergier, she is hell-bent on hunting down the notorious Phantom R, the mysterious art thief who always seems to be a two-step ahead of the law.
Though she is well-meaning in this endeavor, her stubborn streak often puts her in more trouble than she bargains for, and most attempts to dissuade her from her path fall on deaf ears or are met with a severe temper. This attitude often seems more detrimental to her investigative duties, to the point where her father expresses that he’d rather she just stay out of it all—which, of course, she doesn’t, because she’s got a point to prove to him! It does get to be a problem, though, when she refuses help from the one she’s designated as her enemy to the point where she refuses to let Phantom R save her life (he does so anyway.) She is not entirely unreasonable however, even teaming up with Phantom R at times in order to deal with a greater threat to her home city of Paris. She did go back to chasing him immediately following the crisis, but hey, some things just don’t change.
This unyielding attitude pervades into other aspects of Charlie’s life as well—she takes her debts seriously; in example, once Phantom R saves her life on a certain occasion, she insists that she owes him until returning the favor near the end of the game, cheekily adding “Now we’re even, my dear old friend.” and prides herself on being punctual, at one point boasting (rather bluntly) “I am never late.” She chases her goals passionately and is willing to go to just about any length to protect that which she cares about—in canon, it’s chiefly Paris. She’s no slouch at this, either—she is intensely clever and quite perceptive for her age, and was able to predict the movements of the elusive Phantom R twice, something that the Paris Constabulary had trouble with for some time.
Charlie does her best to stay professional and well-conducted at all times, which can often come off as snobbish and aloof, but it’s all in an effort to get people to take her seriously. When her attitude gets the best of her, which it often does around her father and Phantom R, she can respond quite rudely indeed, forgoing names for “Old man” and “idiot” and often joking in a manner that comes off more harsh than she means (or exactly as harsh, depending.)
In another effort to get people to take her seriously, especially when on the job, Charlie often chooses to don masculine clothing. This ‘disguise’, along with her male-sounding nickname is effective enough to have several people mistake her for a boy. It’s no surprise also that Charlie comes off as tomboyish even in girls’ clothes—she plays sports and is interested in a traditionally male-dominated career, as well. She responds defensively when teased about it (“I never thought that you’d look so good in a dress!”) – though this may only be because it was R doing the teasing, she grumpily responds that it’s what she looks like when she attends school and quickly changes the subject. After discovering her mutation, she begins to wear skirts a little less often— if only to stave off possible peeks/wardrobe malfunctions until she can better control her abilities. Which brings us to our next point…
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Charlie’s specialty is in air manipulation. She is able to generate bursts of air which serve to boost the speed and intensity of her moves as well as manipulate airborne projectiles (for example, adding speed/weaving a soccer ball around obstacles after it’s been kicked). She has only had her powers for a few years and is still rather clumsy with them, often generating a (useless, generally agonizing around loose paper/debris) Charlie-sized cyclone around herself when particularly emotional or stressed.
With practice, she’ll be able to cushion herself and others from more dangerous falls by manipulating the wind, as well as keep herself airborne longer without actually achieving flight—think of it as enhanced jumping/slowed descent. If she gets her hands on a hang glider, she’ll be able to power it herself and cruise around regardless of wind or thermals, wheeeee!
AU HISTORY:
Charlotte Vergier was born to Paul and Emma Vergier in Paris, France. Her father, a constable at the time, instilled in her a love for sports and a passion for La Ville-Lumiere as well as giving her the nickname “Charlie” to the chagrin of her mother, who was as protective of the girl as her father was of the city itself. The three of them lived quite happily together, much without incident until tragedy struck, sudden, fast and cruel.
Charlie was fourteen at the time. Her mother’s passing sent shockwaves through what remained of the family, and though Charlie did her best to reach out to him, her father began to seclude himself away, obsessing day and night with his work at the constabulary. As relations grew strained between father and daughter, Charlie began to hear rumours—malicious, nasty, awful rumours—about who… or more specifically, what her mother had truly been.
She brushed them off as best she could as simply that—rumours and nothing more, but the thought continued to linger in her mind.
Fast forward two years. Charlie and her father were constantly at odds, and combining one late night at her father’s office with an argument spun out of control, Charlie’s powers finally made themselves known. In the swirl of gust and papers, the two of them realized that Charlie had inherited her mother’s mutation and realized a fear that her father had been hiding for some time: that his daughter would be discovered and meet a similar fate as his late wife.
In this moment, the two of them found a short reconciliation. Charlie would endeavor to keep herself hidden and under control, and in exchange she would be allowed to begin training as a detective, if only so that her father could keep an eye on her. With this in place, Charlie began to train in secret, honing her skills in private and soon discovering ways to discreetly use them to her advantage, staying effectively under the radar… for the most part.
The following year, a string of mysterious art thefts transpired. Charlie took this as an opportunity to prove herself to her father— firstly that she would be useful to his investigation by capturing the thief, and secondly that she could hold her own, mutation or no. During her investigation, Charlie ended up meeting more people with abilities like her, however briefly... and although she did not like to admit her affiliation with them at first, it was comforting to find that she was not alone.
Tensions escalated when a greater plot was discovered to revive an massive, ancient superweapon with the potential to level Paris, along with the rest of Europe, to the ground. A group calling themselves the Chevaliers Diabolique managed to seize control of said weapon despite the efforts of Charlie and the Constabulary, but the young detective would not back down without a fight. Alongside the rest of the force and the friends she'd made previously, Charlie was able to help stop the Chevaliers and take down the superweapon, saving the city from almost certain destruction.
However...
In the battles that occurred, Charlie had openly made use of her powers in order to defeat the enemy, and now her mutation was revealed to the entire Paris Constabulary as well as the remaining Chevaliers. Though the battle for Paris had been won, the exposure put Charlie at undeniable risk.
A few months passed. With the constabulary keeping tight-lipped about the details of the incident and no sign of the perpetrators save for a few brief sightings of strange men in armor, it all but faded from Paris' memory. In that time, an invitation was extended for Charlie to attend school at the Institute. Though very vocally expressing her doubts at leaving Paris and her father alone should the threat resurface, Charlie very soon found herself on a plane bound for America...

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
Classes were done with, practice had ended. The sun had long vanished from the sky outside her window, and the only indication of its passing being a few bright orange streaks clinging desperately to the clouds.
The sky… the one thing that, in a way, had always stayed the same, even thirty-six thousand miles from home (give or take a few dozen, of course). It was the constant, the connection. Her connection. The young detective had always had an affinity for the air, and her mutation had only proved that further. Through training, she’d improved her skills significantly, and Charlie had been toying with the idea of flight for a while now.
She hadn’t put it to test yet—something these past few days had been holding her back. There are too many variables, she repeated in her head. Do more research. Make sure you can really do it. C’est impossible, especially if you rush through it. Her eyelids drooped, the teen’s expression turning sour as if the window she were staring out of had said something quite unappealing indeed. The window… no, she was beginning to sound like her father.
With a soft grumble, she tipped back into her bed, feet prodding at the ever-present soccer ball on her floor as they swept past. Though having a roommate that was actually around half of the time was a refreshing change, Charlie would grit her teeth and admit that she was homesick… and the whole ‘power of flight’ plan was, in great part, a halfhearted escape wish.
She missed Paris dearly.
Charlie missed it all; the feeling of soaring through the sky on her glider with the city below and the tower in the distance, the friends she’d left behind… she even missed her father, even after three years of almost nothing but arguments and hurt feelings. Sure, she’d felt lonely then, those nights he wouldn’t come home… but it was even lonelier now, with everything she’d known so far away. She was no stranger to it; with loneliness came the sadness and with the sadness came the frustration, and…
A huff. She was stronger than this, and she knew it! There was time to waste through moping around! So what if she was stuck here? Safety could go take a hike, for what she cared, and a new energy had her up and out of bed again. Maybe she couldn’t take the sky all the way home, but it was the closest to feeling at home she imagined she could get. The heavens would be hers, if she could just reach them, so it was time to get started for real.
“Alright, Charlie, now or never…” she began, climbing up and opening the window wide. Three… two… jump!
“It’s showtime!”
